Magnesium – The Missing Link Between Your Gut, Your Emotions, and Your Inner Peace By Karin Nahmani
Magnesium – The Missing Link Between Your Gut, Your Emotions, and Your Inner Peace
Let
me tell you a little secret: in all my years working with people’s
guts, the most underrated mineral I’ve seen — the one that can transform
digestion, calm the mind, and even open the emotional floodgates is
magnesium.
I call it the relax-and-let-go mineral.
Why?
Because magnesium is not just about “helping muscles relax” like most
people think. It’s about creating space in your gut, in your nervous
system, and even in your heart so that you can release what your body
and mind have been holding on to.
Magnesium and Your Gut: A Love Story
Your
digestive tract is one long muscle. From your esophagus down to your
colon, it’s in constant motion moving, squeezing, releasing. This
movement is called peristalsis, and magnesium is a key player in making
it happen smoothly.
When you’re low in
magnesium, your colon muscles can get tight and sluggish, making
everything… well… stuck. That’s why one of the most common side effects
of deficiency is constipation. And when your gut slows down, toxins stay
longer than they should, causing bloating, discomfort, and even skin
issues.
Magnesium doesn’t just keep things
moving it also helps balance stomach acid and supports the enzymes
that break down your food. Without it, you can eat the cleanest, most
beautiful diet, but your body won’t fully absorb the goodness.
Your Gut and Your Emotions Are Twins
I’ve
said it a thousand times in my clinic: your gut and your emotions are
like twins. What happens in one always shows up in the other.
Low
magnesium often shows up not only as constipation but as anxiety,
irritability, and restless sleep. Why? Because magnesium calms your
nervous system. It tells your brain, *“You’re safe. You can let go
now.”*
When you’re stressed, your body actually
uses up magnesium faster. This creates a vicious cycle: stress drains
magnesium → low magnesium makes it harder to handle stress → more stress
→ more depletion. And your gut? It feels every beat of that cycle.
My Personal Truth About Magnesium
I’ve
had clients who came to me with “gut issues” that were really “life
issues.” They were holding on — to fear, to grief, to old stories. Their
bellies were tight, their digestion sluggish. Sometimes, yes, we do a
colonic, but I also send them home with magnesium. Within days, they
start telling me things like, “I feel lighter” or “I’m sleeping
again”.
It’s not magic. It’s chemistry +
permission. Magnesium relaxes your body enough for you to finally exhale physically and emotionally.
Choosing the Right Magnesium. Not all magnesium is created equal.
Magnesium Citrate – gentle and great for getting things moving in the colon.
Magnesium Glycinate – my favorite for calming the mind and helping with sleep.
Magnesium Malate – good for energy and muscle function.
Always
choose a high-quality supplement, ideally with no fillers, and take it
in the evening to support your body’s natural nighttime repair.
Advice from Karin
If
your gut is tense, your mind is racing, and your body feels like it’s
holding on for dear life don’t just ask yourself "what" you’re holding
on to. Ask yourself why your holding on to it?
And as you work on
the emotional side, give your body the physical support it needs to let
go. Sometimes healing starts with something as simple as adding back
what your body has been missing.
For me,
magnesium isn’t just a supplement. It’s a reminder that we are allowed
to relax, digest life, and trust the flow — in our gut, in our heart,
and in our story.
